Chapter 10
December 7, 1941, 0800AM
Yokoyama jumped awake from dozing as a loud whump shook the mini-sub. He glanced over his shoulder to see Komita also waking up and adjusting himself to get into position as another explosion rocked the vessel.
âThis is it,â he shouted over the din. âAhead slow.â
Through the limited field of view from his periscope, he spotted planes in the air, and his chest filled with pride. He watched as they began dropping bombs on ships, fireballs erupting into the sky, and sailors onshore running in all directions.
Yokoyama guided the sub back toward Battleship Row. The USS West Virginia sat directly in front of him, the USS Oklahoma to his left, and the USS Arizona to his right. About one hundred meters from the Oklahoma, he let loose the two torpedoes, each weighing over eight hundred pounds, and watched them as they sped through the water, leaving little wake behind them.
He held his breath.
Threeâ¦twoâ¦oneâ¦.
A plume of water shot into the air, low and wide, but it was enough to obscure the entire Oklahoma from view.
âDirect hit!â he shouted to Komita. âTurn about.â As much as he longed to stay and watch the mighty battleship sink and the Japanese planes demolish the U.S. Navy, he knew it would be suicide. The best thing for them to do was to beat a hasty retreat and hope against hope they would reunite with their countrymen.
The chaos and panic occurring onshore would draw attention to the harbor. Yokoyama suspected the mini-sub would not attract notice in the channel.
As fast as the sub could go, Yokoyama guided them out of the West Loch and around WaipiâO Point toward the entrance of the harbor.
Just a little further. Yokoyama listened as the sounds of continuous explosions began to fade behind them. He ventured raising the periscope just above the water. This area of the island was uninhabited, so if luck was on their side, its wake would not be noticed. As the sub rounded Iroquois Point, the entrance to the Pacific Ocean came into view a short distance ahead.
âShit!â Yokoyama spat. âThe anti-submarine net is closed. Submerge now!â
Komita obeyed, and within seconds, the vessel was stopped under the surface.
âWhat should we do?â Komita asked.
Thoughts raced through Yokoyamaâs mind as he sought options to their predicament. He doubted the net would open anytime soon, probably not for days. They would have to set the charges and destroy the sub.
âWeâll have to go onshore and contact the Japanese network here,â he said at last. âTheyâll hide us and, with any luck, get us back home.â
He ordered Komita to turn the sub around and head back to West Loch.
Its seclusion will keep us from being seen. Weâll wait for dark.
For the rest of the day, Yokoyama napped at his station, moving only to munch on provisions, take a drink of water, and relieve himself. Komita did the same, but neither spoke. Yokoyama studied the maps of the island given to him by Japanese intelligence in case of situations like this.
